Through The Dust: Birdsville is the concept of two high school mates, fueled by a desire for adventure.
Developed in a beer garden in Fitzroy North, what was initially an idea for weekend rides and a web-series, has now developed into a major project with a driven focus in widening the community’s awareness of Mental Health issues and their impacts on young males.
Headed by Navy seaman turned Fire Fighter, Gerard Reeves, and Music Industry Professional Brendan Ryder, this not-for-profit project was inspired by personal experiences within these two emotionally demanding careers.
Through The Dust: Birdsville aims to raise $10,000.00 for Beyond Blue and attempts to share methods of coping with mental health issues through an entertaining and typically Australian web series.
This series will track these two amateur adventurers from their hometown of Rutherglen, VIC all the way to The Birdsville Hotel, QLD on motorbikes!
Gerard ‘Ged’ Reeves,
is a full-time Fire Fighter with the Country Fire Authority in North East Victoria. Ged lives in Albury, NSW with his partner Peta and dog Terra. When not fighting fires Ged loves hiking, rock climbing, 4x4ing
and playing guitar. Having served in the Royal Australian Navy before becoming a Fire Fighter, two high pressure roles, Ged is a keen ambassador for mental health and well-being.
continues Gerard’s enthusiasm in building awareness of mental health and wellbeing. A jack-of-all-trades, Brendan spends his time working between multiple high intensity careers while developing his passion projects. Working as an Audio Engineer and Tour Manager for some of the country’s most successful musical artists, as well as Site and Operations Management of multiple festivals of up to 7500 patrons, he enjoys the development of ideas and seeing their fulfilment. Living in cosmopolitan Fitzroy, this avid music lover, and nature enthusiast can’t wait to take on this challenge!
‘‘It’s good to have an end to journey towards; but it is the journey that matters, in the end.’’
Starting from where their friendship began, Rutherglen High School, the two adventurers of In To The Dust will ride a total of 2000kms all the way to The Birdsville Hotel, QLD.
Expected to take 8 days of consistent riding, traversing some of Australia’s most difficult terrain and through the harshest of the nations climates, the boys are determined to complete this physical and emotional journey while growing stronger throughout.
The 6 Stages of the Journey;
Stage 1 - Rutherglen High School - Mildura (530kms)
Stage 2 - Mildura - Broken Hill (294kms)
Stage 3 - Broken hill - Cobham Lake (236kms)
Stage 4 - Cobham Lake - Cameron Corner (235kms)
Stage 5 - Cameron Corner - Innaminka Hotel (255kms)
Stage 6 - Innaminka Hotel - The Birdsville Hotel (416kms)
The route is expected to take the men from the smooth tarmac of the Murray, across the well worn mining tracks of Broken Hill, to the virtually non-existant ones of the Silver City Highway. This will be a treturous and tiring journey. For a great cause.
Throughout the journey Through The Dust will aim to raise their goal of $10,000.00 for Beyond Blue.
We thank you for all you help!
